On World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we’re raising awareness about the global human trafficking crisis. Florida ranks third in the U.S. for human trafficking and second for labor trafficking. By coming together on this day, we not only honor the victims, but strengthen our dedication to combat and prevent trafficking through awareness, advocacy, and action.

As a major hub with one of the largest seaports in the world, an international airport, and key highways, Miami-Dade County reports the highest number of human trafficking cases in the state. Most victims are 18 to 24 years old and female.

Jackson Health System’s Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center (RTC) offers crucial, free services to sexual assault survivors, including those affected by sex trafficking. The center is staffed by a dedicated team that includes victim advocates, behavioral health therapists, community health educators, victim services specialists, and sexual assault nurse examiners.

“The impact of human trafficking is profound and widespread,” said Judith Oriental-Pierre, MD, RTC’s medical director. “Through comprehensive support services, the Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center strives to aid survivors in their recovery journey, ensuring they receive the care and advocacy they need.”

The severe impact of human trafficking highlights the urgent need for accessible support. To meet these needs, RTC provides victims a variety of specialized resources. These include:

  • Victim advocacy
  • Emotional support, safety, and health services
  • Crisis intervention
  • 24/7 crisis and sexual assault hotline
  • 24/7 forensic evidence collection
  • On-scene crisis response
  • Mental health services
  • Support groups

By raising awareness and promoting action, we can work toward a future where everyone is free from exploitation and abuse. Organizations like RTC help highlight the importance of dedicated resources and compassionate care in the fight against human trafficking.

If you or someone you know needs help, call RTC’s 24/7 crisis and sexual assault hotline at 305-585-7273.
