Kidney disease often develops silently, especially among adults living with high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. A growing national conversation, recently highlighted by a Super Bowl ad including actresses Sofia Vergara and Octavia Spencer, is helping bring attention to a simple but important test that can detect early signs of kidney damage and elevated heart risk.

Why Kidney Health Deserves More Attention

The kidneys filter waste from the blood and help regulate blood pressure and other important body functions. When the kidneys are under stress, they may begin leaking a protein called albumin into the urine. This can be an early warning sign of kidney damage, even before symptoms appear.

Chronic kidney disease often progresses quietly. Many people don’t know they have it until the condition is serious. Additionally, kidney disease significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other heart problems.

Testing That Can Reveal Early Risk

One of the most effective tools for early kidney screening is the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) test. This simple urine test measures how much albumin is present and can help identify kidney damage at its earliest stages. uACR testing is not always included in routine care, which has encouraged raising awareness among patients and healthcare providers.

Who Should Talk to Their Doctor About Screening?

Adults living with long-term high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes should ask their doctor whether uACR screening should be part of their routine care. These conditions are among the leading causes of chronic kidney disease. Early knowledge can support better decision-making, treatment planning, and lifestyle changes, when needed.

It’s important to recognize the role Sofia Vergara and Octavia Spencer are playing in raising awareness about kidney health.

“Early detection remains one of the most effective ways to improve patient health” said Adela Mattiazzi, MD, medical director of adult kidney transplant at the Miami Transplant Institute. “A uACR test is a simple screening tool that can help identify kidney damage early and support better long-term heart and kidney outcomes.”
