The Hidden Dangers of Vaping: What You Need to Know
By: Ignacio Tapia, MD, Pediatric Pulmonologist
From insomnia and aggressive behaviors to permanent lung damage, vaping has become a growing health concern across the U.S. Originally marketed as a safe alternative to smoking, it has rapidly evolved into a threat—particularly for adolescents and young adults.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been working to address one alarming trend: the rise of child-friendly vape products. With flavors like “cotton candy” and “blue raspberry,” these products attract younger users and often serve as a gateway, enticing teens and young adults to start vaping.
A recent study by the American Neurological Association revealed that vaping—particularly among college students—is linked to mental limitations, impacting brain development, memory, attention span, and decision-making skills. For students already navigating the academic and social pressures of college life, these impairments can have long-lasting consequences. When it comes to lung health, the dangers of vaping are equally concerning.
Inhaling vaporized chemicals can cause serious damage to lung tissue. Studies have also shown that vaping can lead to chronic bronchitis-like symptoms and a condition known as “popcorn lung,” which causes permanent scarring of the airways. These effects can make it harder for young users to engage in physical activities, and increases their likelihood of developing respiratory infections.
Nicotine addiction is another significant challenge. Many young users underestimate just how addictive vaping can be, finding themselves trapped in a cycle that’s difficult to break. This addiction often serves as a precursor to riskier behaviors and health issues, including respiratory and heart complications.
Vaping has become a serious health risk. Raising awareness of the mental, respiratory, and physical dangers is key to protecting our communities and empowering young people to make the right choices.
