Tiger Woods Ruptured his Achilles Tendon. What is this Type of Injury and Treatment?
Golf star Tiger Woods recently suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, a serious injury that can sideline even the toughest athletes. But what exactly does it entail, and how is it treated?
What’s an Achilles tendon rupture?
An Achilles tendon rupture affects the largest tendon in the body, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It’s essential for walking, running, and jumping. When it tears, either partially or completely, it can severely limit mobility and require a lengthy recovery process.
How’s an Achilles tendon rupture diagnosed, and what are the treatment options?
Doctors usually diagnose Achilles tendon ruptures through a physical examination, including the Thompson test, where they squeeze the calf to see if the foot moves. If there’s no movement, a rupture is likely. An MRI or ultrasound imaging can provide further confirmation.
Treatment depends on the severity of the rupture and the patient’s activity level. For those who are usually less active, immobilization through a walking boot or cast, alongside physical therapy, can help with healing and restoring mobility. For someone who’s experienced a full rupture, they usually require a surgical treatment, which includes stitching together the torn tendons or a tendon graft. It can take up to six months to fully heal from the injury.
While Achilles tendon ruptures are serious, proper treatment and rehabilitation allow most patients to regain full mobility and strength, helping them return to an active lifestyle.
