The Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital is excited to share that it is now certified in providing Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to adolescents between the ages of 12 to 18 years old, who have experienced sexual abuse.

This nationally known program aims to help participants – victims and their caregivers – reduce trauma-related problems that are impacting their lives and increase their overall well-being.

TF-CBT is an evidence-based trauma treatment for individuals who have experienced problems such as unwanted memories of the traumatic experience; strong emotions including anger, sadness, or anxiety; problems in school; difficulty getting along with others; trouble concentrating and sleeping; and those who go out of their way to avoid reminders of the abuse.

This type of cognitive behavioral therapy has been evaluated and refined over the past 25 years. The federal government’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has recognized this program as a model program due to the extensive outcome data from randomized controlled trials that support its effectiveness in improving a variety of problems.

Shara Kaszovitz, LCSW, a social worker at the Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center, has already begun to see the positive results since its implementation, and hopes that this program will be ongoing.

“Caring for someone who is experiencing trauma symptoms can be overwhelming,” said Kaszovitz. “TF-CBT helps caregivers deal with emotions related to the sexual abuse, implement effective parenting skills, and support for their child.”

The Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center at Jackson provides emotional and medical support – in a completely confidential setting – 24 hours a day, seven days a week to victims ages 12 and over.  All services are provided without charge for all victims and their immediate family members, regardless of whether the crime is reported to police.

If you or a teen you know has experienced a sexual trauma and may benefit from TF-CBT, please call 305-585-5185 or visit https://jacksonhealth.org/rape-treatment/.
