Tuberculosis Outbreak in Kansas: Should Miami-Dade Residents Be Worried?

Senior woman touching

Kansas is currently facing a major tuberculosis (TB) outbreak, with several local cases reported. TB is a lung disease that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. Symptoms include a persistent cough, chest pain, fever, night sweats, and fatigue. In severe situations, it can lead to serious complications.

Should South Florida be concerned? Not really.

The outbreak is contained in Kansas, and health officials say the risk to the general public, even in nearby states, is low. TB doesn’t spread as easily as the flu or COVID-19; you usually must be in close contact with an infected person for a long period to catch it. Since Miami-Dade is far from the affected area, there’s no immediate danger to residents.

That said, TB exists everywhere, and cases do pop up in Florida from time to time. It’s always good to be aware of the symptoms and see a doctor if you have a persistent cough, weight loss, coughing up blood, loos of appetite, fatigue, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. Early detection is key, as TB is treatable with antibiotics, but can become more severe if left untreated.

Staying informed about TB, being mindful of symptoms, and maintaining good health practices are the best ways to ensure South Florida continues to stay safe.
