It’s brave and important when public figures like actress Allison Williams speak openly about childbirth, calling it “profoundly scary” and “a huge trauma.” Her honesty is powerful and familiar to many new parents.

When your birth plan changes suddenly, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed or heartbroken. You imagined one thing and end up facing another. That shift can bring fear, confusion, and grief.

As doctors, we always aim for a safe and healthy delivery, but birth doesn’t always go as planned. That’s why it’s important to talk about all possible scenarios, and what they mean for you and your baby.

Childbirth is unpredictable. Sometimes, despite careful planning, a baby’s heart rate changes, labor slows, or complications arise. In these cases, a C-section may be the safest path for both mother and baby.

Choosing a care team that includes doctors trained in both maternal and newborn care makes a big difference, especially in high-risk or emergency situations. Look for hospitals that have obstetric and neonatal specialists available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

We also encourage expectant parents to ask questions throughout pregnancy, take a tour of the hospital where their doctor delivers, and attend prenatal classes. Getting to know your care team and the space ahead of time can ease stress during labor and delivery.

No matter how your baby is born, it doesn’t define your strength or worth as a parent. What matters most is that you and your baby are safe, and feel supported every step of the way.

If you’re healing from a difficult birth, know that you’re not alone. Talk to your doctor, reach out for support, and give yourself grace. You brought life into the world, and that’s no small thing.
