Understanding Hashimoto’s Disease: What You Need to Know

A woman being examined by her doctor.

After HGTV star Jenn Todryk recently opened up about her experience, more people are learning about Hashimoto’s disease, a common autoimmune condition that affects the thyroid and overall well-being.

What’s Hashimoto’s disease?

Hashimoto’s disease (or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) happens when the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Over time, this can lead to hypothyroidism, meaning the body doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone to regulate energy and metabolism.

Symptoms to watch for

Symptoms often develop slowly and may be easy to overlook. Common signs include:

  • Constant tiredness
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Dry skin and hair thinning
  • Constipation
  • Depression or low mood
  • Brain fog or trouble concentrating
  • Irregular or heavy periods

Some people may also notice swelling in the neck.

Treatment options

Although there’s no cure, Hashimoto’s is manageable:

Thyroid hormone replacement – A daily medication (levothyroxine) restores hormone levels and helps relieve symptoms.

Monitoring – In mild cases, doctors may monitor levels before starting treatment.

Lifestyle support – Healthy eating, regular exercise, good sleep, and stress management can support overall health alongside medical care.

Hashimoto’s disease is common but often underdiagnosed. With proper treatment and regular monitoring, most people can manage symptoms and live healthy, active lives.

If you’re experiencing symptoms, consider speaking with a doctor; early care can make a big difference.
