Actor Dave Coulier recently shared that he has been diagnosed with a new type of cancer called p16-positive squamous cell carcinoma at the base of his tongue.
What’s p16-Positive Squamous Cell Carcinoma?
It’s a cancer that starts in the flat cells lining the mouth and throat. When it’s “p16-positive,” it usually means the cancer is linked to human papillomavirus (HPV). The good news is that this type of cancer often responds well to treatment.
Common Symptoms
Many people notice symptoms slowly over time. They can include:
- A sore throat that doesn’t go away
- Trouble swallowing
- Ear pain
- A lump in the neck
- Changes in the voice

How It’s Treated

- Radiation therapy: Uses targeted energy to kill cancer cells. Dave Coulier is receiving 35 radiation treatments.

- Surgery: In some cases, doctors remove the tumor if it’s safe to do so.
Because p16-positive cancers often respond better than other head and neck cancers, many patients have a good outlook.
