Your Personality Might Help You Choose the Right Exercise Routine

Do you find it hard to stick to an exercise routine? A new study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology shows your personality may play a big role in how often you work out, and what type of exercise works best for you.

Researchers followed more than 2,400 adults for 20 years. They found that people who were more organized, responsible, and good at sticking to plans were more likely to stay physically active over time. People who were more outgoing and social also exercised more often.

Understanding your personality can help you find the kind of physical activity you’re more likely to enjoy and stick with:

  • Organized and goal-focused (conscientious): You may do well with structured workouts like strength training, running plans, or tracking your progress with an app.
  • Outgoing and social (extraverted): Group fitness classes like Zumba, cycling, CrossFit, or team sports might keep you motivated.
  • Creative and curious (open to experience): You may enjoy trying new workouts like dance, martial arts, or hiking in new places.
  • More reserved or anxious (neurotic): Start with calming, low-stress activities like yoga, walking, or swimming at your own pace.

This research reminds us that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to exercise. What works for someone else might not work for you, and that’s okay.

The bottom line: You don’t have to change who you are to get healthy. Use your personality to your advantage and choose the kind of movement that fits you best.
