Denise Osbourne, breast cancer survivor; other cancer survivors; Miami fashion bloggers; and The Falls Mall representatives

What:

The Falls Mall will celebrate women who have survived breast cancer and help raise awareness against the disease during a fashion show. Five Jackson Health System patients will model the latest fall trends as they walk down the runway during the mall’s Mission Pink event, from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, October 10.

One of the patients is Denise Osbourne, who battled breast cancer three years ago. At 27, Denise was doing a self-breast exam at home in Queens NY when she felt a lump. “I waited two weeks after feeling the lump to seek medical attention,” remembers Denise. “Once I went into the doctor’s office, he confirmed the terrible news.”

Given that she didn’t have any history of breast cancer in her family, Denise felt confused. Her mother-in-law in Miami encouraged her to seek a second opinion.

“The doctor who was treating me at that time in New York immediately suggested I get a double mastectomy,” said Denise. “I didn’t feel comfortable jumping to that decision without seeking other options, and decided to come to Jackson.”

Denise flew down to Miami, where she began treatment. She underwent two lumpectomies, where doctors removed the tumor and surrounding tissue. She also had eight rounds of chemotherapy and 40 radiation treatments. She finally became cancer-free in June 2013.

Denise is excited to celebrate her third year on remission at the fashion show Saturday. The event will also feature a silent auction and a scavenger hunt. The event will benefit Susan G. Komen, a non-profit dedicated to saving lives and ending breast cancer.
