National Survey Recognizes All of Jackson’s Hospitals

Miami, FL – The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation named all six Jackson Health System hospitals “Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) Leaders” for the sixth consecutive year.

HEI evaluated Jackson Memorial Hospital, Jackson North Medical Center, Jackson South Community Hospital, Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital, Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital, and Holtz Children’s Hospital/The Women’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial, with all six earning top marks for their policies and practices related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) patients and their families, visitors, and employees.

“At Jackson, we are committed to providing safe, quality, and equal care to every patient who walks through our doors,” said Carlos A. Migoya, president and CEO of Jackson Health System. “To be continually considered a leader in advancing care equality to LGBT patients and their families is something that we take great pride in.”

Jackson is one of a select group of 496 healthcare facilities and systems this year nationwide to be named leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality, and is honored to continue its sixth-year trend, receiving the distinction annually since in 2011.

A total of 2,061 healthcare facilities nationwide were evaluated based on the following: non-discrimination & staff training, LGBT patient services & support, employee benefits & policies, and LGBT patient & community engagement.

Only five other medical organizations and hospitals in South Florida – University of Miami Hospital, VA Miami Healthcare System, VA West Palm Beach Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic Florida, and Care Resource – were included on the list of leaders. A total of 20 facilities in Florida, six of which belong to Jackson Health System, earned the “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” recognition.

“Despite all the progress we’ve made, far too many LGBT people still lack inclusive and affirming healthcare. Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality are helping to change that, and, in the process, making the lives of LGBT patients and their families better each and every day,” said Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign “LGBT people have a right to be treated equally in all aspects of our lives, and HRC celebrates Jackson Health System for its tireless work to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all patients.”

Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation is the educational arm of the country’s LGBT civil rights organization.  For more information about the Healthcare Equality Index 2016, or to download a free copy of the report, visit www.hrc.org/hei.
