Bold Beauty Project to also Feature Photos of Women with Disabilities
Who:
Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital patients and therapists; artists from Rise Up Gallery; representatives from the Bold Beauty Project
What:
An exhibition showcasing the work of artists from adaptive workshops at Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital – many of them patients who are paraplegics or quadriplegics after spinal cord injuries – will be on display in the hospital, alongside photography from the Bold Beauty Project, a powerful, visual arts exhibition that features women with varying disabilities.
The artwork that will be on display in the hospital’s dining room was created by Jackson patients in adaptive art workshops with Rise Up Gallery, a non-profit organization based in Wynwood that provides pro bono therapeutic art workshops to newly injured patients with a variety of ailments, including spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and multiple sclerosis. These art workshops are part of Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital’s Recreation Therapy Department and are often led by Rise Up Gallery’s founder, David McCauley.
Through the photographer’s lens and the personal stories of the women photographed, the Bold Beauty Project seeks to raise awareness of the women’s strength, sensuality, and spirit – all while changing the perceptions of beauty.
