The Miami Burn Center and Firefighters Teach Burn Injury Prevention

Who:

Representatives from Miami-Dade County, Miami, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Hialeah, Key Biscayne and Homestead Air Reserve Base fire rescue departments; Doreann Dearmas, ARNP-C, Miami Burn Center; students from Miami-Dade public and private schools.

What:

Last year, dozens of children were treated for burn injuries at the Miami Burn Center, located at Ryder Trauma Center at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. To teach children how to avoid getting burned, the center’s medical staff and local firefighters will host thousands of first through third-grade students from Miami-Dade County public and private schools at the 34th Annual Children’s Fire Safety festival. The program, taking place this week, is a collaboration between the Miami Burn Center and various fire departments across Miami-Dade County.

By participating in five interactive learning-stations, children will have the opportunity to “Learn Not to Burn.” Fire personnel will offer lessons on: stop, drop and roll; kitchen and bath safety; home fire drill planning; crawling to keep low under smoke; escape planning for windows and doors with bars; matches and lighter safety; and accessing the 9-1-1 emergency system. More than 1,800 children have received training each year since the program began.

The Miami Burn Center is one of the leading, most comprehensive burn treatment centers in the nation, treating hundreds of patients – from babies to adults – each year.
