What:

Jackson Health System and HistoryMiami Museum have teamed up to celebrate Jackson’s centennial – and 100 years of making miracles for our community. Mark your calendars for the Jackson Health Family Fun Day this Saturday, April 14 – an event that is open to the public with fun for the entire family. Explore Jackson’s “A Century of Miracles” exhibit with guided tours at 1 and 3 p.m. by local historian, Dr. Paul George. There will also be free health screenings, music, arts and crafts, storytelling, food vendors, and more.

“From a great nursing school, to being a leading hospital during the polio epidemic, to performing the first open heart surgery in 1956, there were a lot of historic moments for this hospital,” said HistoryMiami Museum Resident Historian Dr. Paul George. “We at HistoryMiami Museum are pleased to be able to present that history as we take our patrons through a tour of this exhibition on Saturday.”

Over the last century, Miami City Hospital has grown from a small hospital with 13 beds and a handful of employees to Jackson Health System, one of the nation’s largest, most comprehensive health systems with more than 2,100 beds and more than 12,000 full-time employees. Jackson is known for its highly trained physicians and cutting-edge care. It has since expanded to six hospitals, multiple primary care clinics and specialty care centers, two long-term care nursing facilities, corrections health clinics, and a network of behavioral health facilities and urgent care centers.

The exhibit will take guests through a timeline that features important events and medical firsts in the history of Jackson Health System. Did you know Jackson Memorial Hospital – the health system’s flagship facility – has made national and international headlines for treating high-profile patients? Among them: president-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was shot at during an attempted assassination during a 1933 political rally at Bayfront Park in Miami.

HistoryMiami is the premier cultural institution committed to gathering, preserving and celebrating Miami’s history through exhibitions, city tours, education, research, collections and publications.
