Miami Transplant Institute Becomes First Center in the United States to Use New Lung Preservation System
Miami, FL – On June 5, 2025, Miami Transplant Institute (MTI) became the first center in the United States to use the X Port Lung Preservation System by Traferox to transport donor lungs from a hospital in the northeast U.S. to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) underwent a lung transplant surgery and received the gift of life.
This newly FDA-approved organ transport unit preserves the donor lungs at 10°C for up to 12 hours, allowing transplant surgeries to happen at the optimal time of day with the goal of better outcomes for the patient and the surgical team.
“This preservation strategy allows us to keep the donor lungs preserved for longer, which allows the transplant surgery to then become a semi-elective procedure,” said Mauricio Pipkin, MD, surgical director of lung transplant at MTI, and surgical director of The Lung Center at Jackson Health System. “This allows us to go further for donor lungs, and allows us to preserve the donor lungs for a longer time, so we can get our patients transplanted quickly and efficiently.”
“The lung transplant team at MTI is always leading the way – setting the standard in patient care through unmatched expertise, constant innovation, and endless dedication,” said Luke Preczewski, vice president of MTI.
“Their goal every day is to give every patient the best possible chance at a new beginning.”
