JACKSON HEALTH SYSTEM NAMED A “LEADER IN LGBT HEALTHCARE EQUALITY”

Jackson is one of only 71 U.S. healthcare organizations – and the only one in South Florida – to be recognized with this distinction

MIAMI, FL – Jackson Health System is one of only 71 healthcare organizations in the United States – and one of three in Florida – to be named a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality.”

The Healthcare Equality Index 2012 report, published by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, gave Jackson top marks for its policies and practices related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) patients and their families. These policies include patient and employment non-discrimination, visitation and cultural competency training for staff.

“We are proud that Jackson Health System is once again being praised for treating all of our patients equally, with one standard of quality care,” said Carlos A. Migoya, president and CEO of Jackson Health System. “Being recognized as a ‘Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality’ is a testament to Jackson’s commitment to the LGBT community in Miami-Dade County.”

Jackson Health System is the only healthcare system in South Florida to be recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality.” Only two other Florida hospitals – H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare –
were included on the list.

Founded in 1980, HRC is the largest LGBT civil rights organization in the country. Its report this year rates 71 survey respondents that represent 234 facilities nationwide.
