MIAMI – Jackson North Medical Center is offering a new clinical trial for detection of the spread of thyroid cancer and an individualized treatment plan for patients who have high-risk thyroid cancer. This new study uses advanced molecular imaging with a new investigative drug of iodine isotopes (I-124), which has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The study uses a single scanner to provide Positron Emission Tomography and Computerized Tomography (PET-CT) to detect the spread of thyroid cancer with high sensitivity and precision. Additionally, this advanced technique can be used to perform individualized treatment planning to provide a more complete picture of the patient’s overall health. Jackson North, one of only three locations in the nation with the expertise to offer this type of clinical trial, is currently accepting patients.
“This new approach in cancer diagnosis and treatment using molecular imaging allows us to see and fight cancer better,” said Seza A. Gulec, M.D., FACS, lead surgical oncologist at Jackson North. “The trial is a new addition to Jackson North Medical Center’s strong molecular imaging and therapy program.”
The most frequent types of thyroid cancer are papillary and follicular in tissue structure. The initial treatment of these cancers involves total removal of the thyroid with or without lymph node dissection. Following surgical treatment, patients are treated with radioactive iodine. Current evaluation for cancer spread is performed using conventional nuclear medicine cameras and radioisotopes named I-123 and I-131. There is a need for more sensitive and precise detection for hidden cancers as well as a strong tool for improved clinical decision-making.
