DR. PATRICIA CANTWELL BEING RECOGNIZED FOR LEADERSHIP IN PALLIATIVE CARE AT HOLTZ CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Team Provides a Continuum of Family-Centered Compassionate Care

Miami – Holtz Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center is pleased to announce that Dr. G. Patricia Cantwell is being honored as the Pediatric Champion for 2013 by the Woman’s Cancer Association (WCA) of the University of Miami.  Dr. Cantwell is being recognized for leading a team of doctors and staff who dedicate their lives to helping children and families deal with their diseases in the best ways possible, according to WCA spokesperson Sara Lee Sanderson.

“Although I am being recognized by name, the WCA is truly rewarding the selfless efforts of so many members,” said Dr. Cantwell, director of pediatric palliative care at Holtz, chief of pediatric critical care medicine for UM Miller School of Medicine and member of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. “This organization has inspired our interdisciplinary team to continue our mission against almost insurmountable odds. The WCA truly rocks for making our vision a reality.”

Palliative care services at Holtz provide patients and families with continuous, compassionate, comprehensive, culturally sensitive and family-centered care beginning as soon as a child is diagnosed. A child’s life-threatening illness is one of life’s toughest events, and the team provides assistance in understanding the psychological effects of a disease and helps with decision-making, with a focus on social and spiritual needs. The team approach, centered in the Holtz Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, takes palliative care to exceptional levels by aiming for quality of life and family-centered care at all times. Dr. Cantwell assumes hands-on leadership of the multidisciplinary team of caregivers.

“She has touched countless children and families, often during the most difficult moments of their lives,” said Steven Burghart, senior vice president and chief administrative officer of Holtz. “She has passion for quality care and is a tireless advocate for improving palliative care.”

Dr. Cantwell is being recognized at the Woman’s Cancer Association’s Dancing for a Cure Gala, being held Saturday, February 16. The gala will be held at UM’s Newman Alumni Center, 6200 San Amaro Dr., Coral Gables, from 7 p.m. to midnight. WCA provides funds for cancer research, education and patient welfare at our UM partners.
