Residents in Overtown and surrounding communities turned out to take advantage of free health screenings, healthy cooking demonstrations and other tips on healthy living at the Jefferson Reaves Center health fair on Saturday, March 23.
There was something for everyone at the fair. Free Zumba and line dance classes encouraged people to get moving and make exercise a regular part of their regimen to get healthier. The Kids Zone provided a play area and an opportunity for children to read and learn about health.
“I’m so thankful that the residents in the area came to take advantage of the fair and the many services we provided,” said Rachel Freeman, director of the Reaves Center. “Our goal was to provide health information and connect the community with key organizations and resources to help them get well and stay well.”
Residents were able to get free health screenings for blood pressure, glucose and dental issues. Fair goers also attended demonstrations on how to cook healthy meals. Free child car seats were distributed to qualifying pregnant women who registered and attended a car seat safety class.
“We plan to do this on an annual basis and look forward to the health fair becoming a major event in the community,” said Freeman.
