RYDER TRAUMA CENTER’S EXPERT SURGEONS EXAMINE THE MEDICAL RESPONSE TO BOSTON’S BOMBING VICTIMS

Doctors Worldwide Participated in Telemedicine Conference from Jackson’s Trauma Center

Miami, FL – Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital hosted an international telemedicine conference on Friday, April, 26, to examine the medical response to the Boston bombings. During the videoconference, University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center physicians and medical professionals from across the globe assessed intra-hospital preparation for mass casualty events; explained the triage of victims in mass casualty incidents; and analyzed the management of blast, penetrating and traumatic amputation injuries. They also explored disaster preparedness during high attendance events.

Physicians from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Thailand, Iraq and other countries shared information on their experiences with emergency situations, from hurricanes and civil disturbances to injuries caused by terrorist activity.

One of the featured presenters was Dr. David King, a Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) trauma surgeon and army reservist, who ran the Boston marathon. Following the bombing Dr. King immediately went to MGH to treat victims. Dr. King trained at Jackson Memorial Hospital in general and critical care from 2006 through 2007, before being deployed to Iraq.

International telemedicine conferences on various medical subjects are held monthly at Ryder Trauma Center.
