Radiation Oncology

TARGIT-IORT treats early breast cancer with a single dose of radiation therapy, administered at the time of your lumpectomy. So you’re done by the time you wake up. There’s no need to return to the hospital for three to six weeks of additional treatment. And you can get on with your life.

Only one dose.
Only where it’s needed.

Traditional breast cancer radiation therapy treats the whole breast from the “outside in.” Because the breast is so close to the heart and lungs, the radiation has to be administered in small doses over time. TARGIT-IORT targets the dose from the “inside out” immediately after the tumor has been removed, as part of the same surgery. This means more radiation where it’s needed—right at the tumor site—with less damage to the surrounding tissue.

Common Questions on TARGIT-IORT

What happens during radiation therapy treatment?

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is administered at the time of lumpectomy, following tumor removal. IORT is delivered using a miniaturized radiation device inserted into the lumpectomy incision. Therapeutic radiation is then directed immediately and precisely right where it is needed most – the location where the cancer was removed. IORT is delivered as a 20- to 30-minute treatment during surgery.

Will I be emitting radiation after the procedure?

No, this form of therapy only delivers radiation during the procedure. No radiation source will be left in your body. This is different than some other forms of radiation where a radioactive seed is left in the body and continues to be active for a few days.

What are the benefits of this radiation therapy?

This treatment minimizes radiation exposure to healthy tissue and organs as the treatment is delivered where it is needed the most – the location where the cancer was removed. Localizing the radiation inside the breast is effective because this is where the cancer is most likely to recur.

How is this radiation oncology therapy different from conventional radiation therapy?

Conventional radiation therapy, generally referred to as whole-breast radiation therapy (WBRT), produces a beam of high-energy radiation directed toward the entire breast. Patients are typically treated five days a week during a three- to six-week period. IORT is delivered as a 20- to 30-minute treatment during lumpectomy where the cancer was removed.

Who is on my radiation therapy team?

The surgeon coordinating your breast conservation therapy, a radiation oncologist, physicist, nursing staff, and other medical staff.
