Sustainability at
Jackson Health System

Jackson Health System’s Climate Committee is comprised of employees who’re committed to building a low-carbon healthcare system that supports Jackson’s values.

Waste

We work with our integrated waste stream partner and employees to reduce waste throughout our facilities. The team consistently implements procedures and practices to reduce the volume of wastes requiring special treatment, while also recycling and re-using products, when possible.

Chemicals

At Jackson, we not only commit to regulatory compliance when working with chemicals, but also to reviewing the selection of safer chemicals, wherever possible. We separate and manage pharmaceutical wastes, have eliminated use of mercury, promote use of green cleaning solutions for environmental cleaning, and continuously work to eliminate products containing chemicals that pose a health concern.

Healthy Food

We’re dedicated to being environmentally conscious with our food and nutrition services by reducing food waste, practicing portion control, and implementing innovative ordering strategies. Through ongoing data analysis and improvement initiatives, we strive to achieve our shared vision of a greener, more sustainable future for our community.

Smarter Purchasing

We work with our clinical professionals, leadership, and suppliers to ensure selected goods and services are the best choice for economic and environmental performance.

Jackson follows established Environmentally Preferred Purchasing (EPP) guidelines to increase the use and availability of environmentally preferable green products and services, selected based on their impact on the environment and human health.

Leaner Energy

In collaboration with our engineering, facilities, and operations teams, we’re working toward energy conservation. It’s our goal to reduce overall energy use and explore alternative energy sources.

Water and Other Natural Resources

We’re dedicated to finding innovative ways to conserve, recycle, and re-use natural resources.

Climate

As an organization, we’ll invest in energy efficiency, and find ways to use renewable energy sources. We’ll educate our staff on the importance of sustainability and provide opportunities for them to implement more sustainable practices.

Green Buildings

To make our facilities more eco-friendly, we’ve implemented SMART building controls, real-time energy monitoring, and central BAS software monitoring. We continue to replace florescent lights with energy-saving LEDs, and air handling units and chillers with energy-efficient models. We’ll continue to search for opportunities to apply environmentally sustainable tactics, when feasible.

Community Outreach

Jackson has worked with various organizations in the community to promote sustainability, such as volunteering for natural area restoration and tree planting in conjunction with Million Trees Miami, and commemorating Earth Day by participating in Baynanza’s Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day event.
