About

Dr. Unoma Akamagwuna serves as the Shriners endowed chief of pediatric rehabilitation for UHealth Jackson Children’s, where she leads the pediatric rehabilitation program at Holtz Children’s Hospital and Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at UHealth/Jackson Memorial.

A nationally recognized expert in pediatric rehabilitation, Dr. Akamagwuna specializes in the care of children with brain injuries, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and neuromuscular disorders, delivering coordinated, family-centered care that supports long-term function and independence.

Originally from Nigeria, she brings a global perspective and deep cultural awareness to her work. She earned her undergraduate degree from Xavier University of Louisiana, majoring in psychology with minors in international affairs and chemistry, before completing her medical degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She went on to complete a highly specialized combined residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation, pediatrics, and pediatric rehabilitation at the University of Colorado and Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Additionally, Dr. Akamagwuna is a dedicated educator and mentor, having served as a fellowship program director and playing a key role in training future leaders in pediatric rehabilitation. She has led multidisciplinary programs, including spina bifida and spinal cord clinics, and is committed to advancing innovative, team-based care models that improve outcomes for children and families.

As a physician leader, Dr. Akamagwuna is known for combining clinical excellence with compassion, collaboration, and a strong commitment to improving the lives of children through rehabilitation medicine.
