Radiation where it’s needed.
You are at a higher risk for breast cancer if any of the following applies to you:
- YOU HAVE a lifetime risk of breast cancer of 20% or more. Ask your health care provider about having a breast cancer risk assessment done by age 30.
- YOU HAVE a genetic mutation or have a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) with a genetic mutation for which you have not been tested yet.
- YOU RECEIVED radiation therapy to the chest prior to age 30 years.
- YOU HAVE already been diagnosed with breast cancer prior to age 50.
- YOU HAVE dense breast tissue on mammography and had breast cancer after age 50.

Tests, Treatments and Procedures
Palpable Mass Biopsy
The biopsy or excision of a palpable (tangible) mass with or without image-guidance.
Stereotactic-Guided Breast Biopsy
In stereotactic breast biopsy, a special mammography machine uses x-rays to help guide the radiologist’s biopsy equipment to the site of the imaging abnormality. Stereotactic breast biopsy is performed as a non-surgical method of assessing a breast abnormality. If the results show cancer cells, the surgeon can use this information for planning treatment.
Pre Surgical Image-Guided Needle Localization
Under image-guidance the radiologist places a needle and guide wire or a radiofrequency tag into the suspicious area to help the surgeon locate the lesion for surgical biopsy.
Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy
An ultrasound-guided breast biopsy uses sound waves to help locate a lump or abnormality and remove a tissue sample for examination under a microscope. It is less invasive than surgical biopsy, leaves little to no scarring and does not involve exposure to ionizing radiation. If the results show cancer cells, the surgeon can use this information for planning treatment.
MRI-Guided Breast Biopsy
In MRI-guided breast biopsy, magnetic resonance imaging is used to help guide the radiologist’s instruments to the site of the abnormal growth. It is less invasive than surgical biopsy, leaves little to no scarring and does not involve exposure to ionizing radiation. If the results show cancer cells, the surgeon can use this information for planning treatment.
