MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is a diagnostic test that allows radiologists to see inside of the body. This imaging method produces a series of cross-sectional pictures using a very strong magnet. MRI technology has advanced markedly over the past several years making the experience much more comfortable to the patient. Physicians can detect many conditions in earlier stages, greatly optimizing patient outcomes.

Jackson Memorial Hospital uses state-of-the-art MRI scanners which offer the latest in technologies to take pictures with very high resolution of your body while placing you at ease during the procedure. These images give your physician important information in diagnosing your medical condition and planning a course of treatment. Our MRI department is accredited by the American College of Radiology.

Some of the clinical procedures offered are:

  • MRI breast imaging
  • MRI cardiac imaging
  • MRI brain Imaging
  • MRI abdominal imaging
  • MRA or MR angiography of all blood vessels
  • Pediatric MRI Imaging with or without Sedation
  • MRI under Anesthesia for extremely claustrophobic patients
  • MRS/ MRI spectroscopy

MRI Safety

MRI uses a very strong magnetic field that can be very hazardous to patients with certain metallic implants. To ensure your safety, we will need to ask some very specific questions to prevent any harm to you. If you have any specific questions please call 305-585-6000. If you have experienced anxiety in the past from being in close places, please contact your ordering physician for any type of anti-anxiety medication that you may need prior to your MRI exam.

What to Wear

For all MRI scans, you most likely will change into a hospital gown. Our changing areas are private and there is a secure locker for your clothes. It is best, however, to leave valuable items at home. If you are wearing anything metallic (jewelry, dentures, eyeglasses, hearing aids, etc) that might interfere with the MRI scan, we will ask you to remove them.

Before Your MRI

If your prescription for MRI contains the words “with contrast”:

  • Do not eat or drink anything other than water four hours prior to exam.
  • Bring BUN/Creatinine test lab results if testing was performed outside of a Jackson Health System facility and less than 30 days prior to your appointment date. (both)
  • Contact your physician or call 305-585-6000 to arrange lab testing if you do not have lab results, or if your lab results will be older than 30 days on your appointment date.
  • Notify your physician if you are allergic to iodine; when pre-medicated, do not take the last pill until instructed by the MRI technologist upon arrival in MRI scan.
  • Please call the MRI Department at 305-585-6000 if you have questions about preparation for your exam.

  • Some MRI exams require intravenous contrast that will need an IV to be placed prior to your exam.
  • The technologist will take you into the MRI room, lay you on a table and make you comfortable.
  • You will be given hearing protection (music can be provided at you request) and a communication device. You will then be moved into the MRI tube, which is open at both ends.
  • There will be various noises that you will hear throughout the exam. The noises can be loud at times and can cause the table to vibrate.
  • Most MRI exams will take about 30 minutes to two hours depending on what your physician has requested.

After Your MRI

  • You may resume normal activity after you leave the MRI department.
  • The results of your MRI will be made available to the prescribing physician.

We support a wide variety of services including: orthopedics, GI, GU, neurology, transplant, surgery, and pediatrics. We offer same day appointments for routine x-ray imaging studies.

Some of the procedures performed in the Radiology X-Ray Department include:

  • Bone X-ray
  • Chest X-ray
  • Abdomen (KUB) X-ray
  • Cystograms
  • Upper GI
  • Esophagrams
